Social Media Profiles

July 16, 2018 News

Social Media investigations are a powerful tool in today’s society and our investigators at Sunset Blvd. Investigations, Inc. (SBI) have stayed on top of this ever-growing trend for over 15 years. Our investigators and research analysts possess the skills and expertise with much more knowledge than just a basic understanding of Twitter or Facebook.

The Global Digital Report 2018 (www.digitalreport.wearesocial.com) provided the following statistics:

Internet users worldwide in 2018 is 4.021 billion, up 7 percent year-on-year.
Social media users worldwide in 2018 is 3.196 billion, up 13 percent year-on-year.
Mobile phone users in 2018 is 5.135 billion, up 4 percent year-on-year.
Social Media continues to have a wide influence on our culture today and provides a wealth of information. We see it being implemented into many aspects of our daily lives, so logically, it would make sense that we incorporate it in our investigation process.

For example, social media can provide a timeline of a person’s online activity. With the date and time posted when they tweet; update a status; or add a picture, blog, or message; it can show information that can become useful in a wide array of situations such as; determine an individual’s character, look for signs of illegal or inappropriate behavior, locate a missing or hard to find person, or to prove or disprove an alibi.

Many people use their social media accounts as online diaries of a sort. They share important details of their day with friends, family, and anyone else who visits their profile. While they may think that the information is being reserved for those that are close to them, the information that they put out on the Internet is actually viewed by more people than what may be expected.

Profiles may be viewed by individuals from completely different areas that are simply browsing through the Internet. It can also be viewed by attorneys, investigators, and even potential employers.

Information found online can become an important part of legal cases these days, and the outcome can be swayed depending on what is found. When conducting a background investigation, checking online profiles has become a valuable tool. Investigators can gain a greater understanding of where a person was and what they were doing, to slowly begin to piece together a chain of events.

Our investigations have uncovered posts that related to drug use, illegal activity, supporting or discrediting current and past employment and education as well as finding offensive content such as sexism and racism. We use up-to-date, sophisticated software to dig deep into the metadata involving parties in civil litigation, criminal matters and family law pertaining to spousal infidelity.

We’ve often uncovered people’s hidden online profiles that they’ve secreted by using fraudulent names (aliases) who are intentionally trying to hide their identities for an array of different reasons, all of which have been for unsuitable motives.

All social media material that we capture is accomplished in an ethical and legal method which can be used in a court of law.
