The darkest of all window tint will not be enough to hide the belongings inside your vehicle. Criminals are now using cell phone cameras to look through tinted windows. When a criminal puts their cell phone in camera mode, up to the glass, they can see right through it.
People just assume that the darker the tint is, the more privacy it’s supposed to offer. If you believe your tinted windows block thieves from viewing the contents on the inside of your vehicle, think again. Don’t be led into a false sense of security that the window tint doubles as an invisible shield for your property such as cell phones, laptops, or even a wallet.
It is now the norm for high tech thieves to use a new tactic to get past your tinted windows. Now they utilize their cell phone cameras, as illustrated below, to see what’s inside. The highly developed cell phone cameras are able to adjust the brightness and exposure and consequently focus directly through the window.
The science behind this was revealed by a Reddit user with the handle “First_half_23” who writes, “Basic physics tells us this: When seeing through a tinted glass, the side with the less ambient light can see through to the side with the more ambient light. When you put your camera right on the glass, you’re reducing the gap to zero thereby making the side with your phone camera the side with the less ambient light. Therefore, you can see inside.”
