WHY WOMEN ARE OUTSTANDING PRIVATE INVESTIGATORS

July 6, 2021 Private Investigations

My business partner, Randy Petee and I, Steve Polak, have been living in this world of investigations for many decades. As the founders of Sunset Blvd. Investigations, Inc.(SBI), we have a combined total of eighty plus years in law enforcement and as licensed private investigators with half of that time spent as law enforcement officers.  Upon retirement from law enforcement we both had achieved the designated rank of Detective, myself with the Los Angeles Police Department and Randy with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

This blog should have been written many years ago.  I’m not writing this to beat up on male investigators but rather to highlight female investigators contributions to the industry.  There’s very few blogs on this topic and it’s time to add one more.  Randy and I want to give a huge shout out and applaud our female investigators, Hannah Kim and Heidi Goldberg along with our researcher Monica Moon.  This blog deals with the invaluable contributions that they and other women in this profession have to offer in the investigative field.

My aim is to showcase the accomplishments and value that women can bring to the table.  The bottom line is simple, this investigative industry is dominated by men who sometimes question if women even have a role in it.  Definitely old school thinking but the tide is rapidly turning.  Hope this blog helps to turn it even faster!

Hannah, Heidi and Monica are intuitive, detail oriented, multitaskers, who perceptive and often detect non-verbal signals, making them exceptional while conducting interviews and in conducting in depth research.  Research is defined as the systematic investigation into, and study of, materials and sources in order to establish facts and to reach conclusions.  Research plays a major in investigations.  During this stage, our investigators find connections, link details, pay attention to the finer minutiae as well as collaboratively analyzing data quickly and efficiently.  These findings frequently uncover the truth and solve the case.

We’ve been asked numerous times by clients if we know of any female Investigators. After many decades in this industry I assure them that we do, and that they’re extremely effective, adding, that in many cases they produce better results than our male counter parts.  Female investigators put clients at ease, have more empathy than men and an understanding and affinity for their client’s concerns.

One specific area where women investigators excel is surveillance.  There’s locations where a female target might go that a male investigator can’t follow or could draw suspicion just because the investigator is a male. To better illustrate this point is a case we worked in Los Angeles.  It was a corporate case wherein our target downloaded proprietary information to sell to a rival company.  Our informant advised us that our male target would be making an exchange of the stolen property in a quiet, residential neighborhood park.  Knowing that our target was trained in counter surveillance we knew that putting a male investigator near the exchange location could cause suspicion and would burn the surveillance.  We also knew that having a female investigator sitting on a blanket, holding a baby in her arms, would not be threatening to the target and she’d be overlooked.  The ruse worked, the exchange was made, and our female investigator captured everything on video and the suspect was eventually arrested.  You see, there was no real baby, it was a prop with a built in camera.  Our female investigator was never burnt, and the case reached a successful conclusion.

Female investigators tasks are dependent on their abilities to make themselves invisible, to live in the shadows of their subject’s day to day activities.  Basically stated, she must blend in with her subject’s surroundings.  To illustrate the point, if the subject she’s surveilling is walking with another person and is engaged in a conversation that she wants to overhear, she’ll want to get close enough to eavesdrop without raising the concern of that subject.  It’s worked in the past and will continue to work in the future. I can tell you from decades of experience that a male investigator will find that specific task difficult to pull off.

A second example where women excel is during interviews of both men and women. Our female investigators are trained not only in observations of body language during an interview, but with their expertise in communication.  Women, more than men, are empathetic listeners who have the ability to make a subject speak about something of a personal nature, which have opened the door to making the subject unguarded and to speak more freely.

At SBI, our highly skilled female investigators possess the knowledge, undercover expertise, diverse backgrounds, education, and life experiences that are needed to uncover the answers essential to solving our clients problems.
